We’re lucky to have the support of more than 250 talented volunteers who help us operate our used bookstores across Ottawa. FOPLA is a volunteer organisation powered by people who believe in the value of a strong public library in our community. Our volunteers are book lovers, library supporters, and avid readers who enjoy giving back to their communities. If you would like to volunteer with FOPLA, there are a few criteria that must be met:

Courtesy and enthusiasm when interacting with bookstore customers and library staff

Must be 18 years of age or older

Physical ability to move and lift boxes/carts of books (unless otherwise specified)

Proficiency in English; all other languages are an asset

Knowledge and love of books

All volunteers must have access to email for communication

Current Opportunities
Treasurer
FOPLA is looking for a volunteer to serve on our Board of Directors as Treasurer.

​Commitment: Two years
Availability: Flexible, 1-5 hours per week

I have always believed that public libraries are among the last truly democratic spaces in our communities. They are places where everyone is welcome, where curiosity is encouraged, where children discover the joy of reading, where newcomers find connection, where seniors find community, and where people of all ages can learn, create, reflect, and grow.
That is why the work of the Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association is so important. FOPLA does more than support our libraries. They help strengthen the very idea of what a library can be. Through their dedication, generosity, and tireless volunteerism, they help ensure that our libraries remain vibrant, accessible, and deeply connected to the people they serve.
As Chair of the Ottawa Public Library Board, I am incredibly grateful for FOPLA’s continued partnership and advocacy. Their work reflects the best of Ottawa: neighbours helping neighbours, volunteers giving their time and energy, and a shared belief that access to books, literacy, learning, and community should be available to everyone.
