Accepted items include:

unique and rare books • vinyl records • artwork • securities • life insurance policies• real property

How to Apply

Apply
Complete the GIK Application form below. Any supporting documentation you wish to provide can also be uploaded to the form. (e.g. photos, spreadsheets, etc…)
Application Review
After reviewing the application, FOPLA’s GIK Committee will contact the Donor by email within 30 days to notify you if the item(s) are considered suitable for us to accept.
Valuation
If the donation is suitable, the GIK Committee will request delivery of the item(s) to the FOPLA Distribution Centre (FDC) located at the James Bartleman Centre at 100 Tallwood Drive, Ottawa. At this point, item(s) will be held at the FDC for valuation purpose but still belong to the Donor.
Notification
The GIK Committee will notify the Donor by email of the final valuation of the GIK donation, and request their agreement in writing to donate the item(s) at that valuation amount.
  • If the Donor does not agree, the GIK committee will arrange a time for the donor to pick up the donation at the FDC.
  • If the Donor agrees, an official donation receipt will be issued to the Donor for the fair market value and the items donated will then become the property of FOPLA. FOPLA reserves the right to determine the retention, disposition, location, treatment, and other considerations related to the use of the GIK.

Tax receipts will only be issued for GIK donations with a fair market value greater than $500 CAD. Please note we do not accept donations of encyclopedia.

Valuation Process

Tax-deductible gifts-in-kind valued at less than $1,000 CAD

FOPLA will select an internal appraiser (determined by the GIK Committee) for each donation valued at less than $1,000 CAD to determine fair market value.

Tax-deductible gifts-in-kind valued at $1,000 CAD or greater

The Donor must submit an original signed certificate from an independent appraiser. An independent appraisal is required from a qualified and knowledgeable expert, with the cost of the independent appraisal to be borne by the potential Donor. The original signed certificate will be copied by FOPLA, and the original will be returned to the Donor.

FOPLA is in compliance with Canada Revenue Agency guidelines related to GIK. Click here for more information.
