Description
The Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association (FOPLA) was created through the amalgamation of three previous library friends groups: the Friends of the Nepean Library; the Friends of the Cumberland Library; and the Friends of the Ottawa Library.
Since amalgamating in 2003, FOPLA has expanded from four original bookstores to an organization that now donates more than $350,000 annually to Ottawa’s public library system. FOPLA has also provided $85,000 in library sciences scholarships and bursaries to the University of Ottawa and Algonquin College, with the goal of inspiring the next generation of library advocates.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for a volunteer to serve on our Board of Directors as Treasurer.
Attributes:
- available to commit to volunteering for at least two years
- attention to detail, organized
- proven leadership skills
- strong relationship management skills
- finance and accounting experience or education
- team player
Nice to have:
- CPA designation
- experience working with a not-for-profit or charitable organization.
- experience as a member of a board of directors
Responsibilities:
As Treasurer, you will oversee the treasury, tax and financial management and reporting of the Friends of the Ottawa Public Library.
- You provide financial advice to the President and Board of Directors and lead them in the annual budgeting process.
- You guide and oversee the Finance Coordinator in performance of their day-to-day financial and operational responsibilities.
- You coordinate and support the annual financial audit by its Board-approved audit firm.
- You ensure risk management and compliance of the FOPLA financial framework and internal control over its processes with maximum transparency and accountability.

Board of Director monthly meetings are currently held virtually. Ad-hoc strategic meetings may take place in-person venues at various Ottawa Public Library branches throughout the city.
