It’s that time of year again – time to get ready for pot-pourri 2017! This collection features poetry, short-stories, and comics by the winners of the Ottawa Public Library’s annual Awesome Authors Youth Writing contest.
Since 2007, we’ve sponsored the Awesome Authors contest as part of our commitment to support the programming of the Ottawa Public Library. We’re proud to publish pot-pourri every year, which encourages local youths to get creative and show off their artistic skills in both official languages.
This year’s launch event will take place on Monday, November 6, 2017 from 6:30 – 8PM at Ben Franklin Place, located at 101 Centrepointe Drive. Each winning author will be invited to join family and friends to celebrate their achievement, and receive a copy of the anthology.
We also hold a contest to help us find a young, talented local artist to design the cover of the pot-pourri anthology. Congratulations go to Sumaya Deen, the winner of our pot-pourri 2017 Cover Design contest. Sumaya’s drawing will be used as inspiration for the cover of pot-pourri 2017, and she will be credited for the design on the back of the book.
We asked Sumaya to share what inspired her to create the colorful, mixed-media design:
“My artwork for the pot-pourri 2017 cover is a mixed-media design that uses a variety of shapes, colors, and patterns to display a facial profile. This signifies unity for all of society.
Our differences and traits that each one of us are given, inspired me to create a bold and powerful piece, that symbolizes our diversity. It is a unique design to demonstrate that we all have our differences. I included descriptive words that are motivating and uplifting, for people of all ages and groups.
The main message behind my piece is: regardless of your beliefs, your race, skin color, or your ethnicity, we are all equal and balanced as a whole. I hope that my art inspired all of the Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association.”
Be sure to join us for the book launch on November 6 to purchase your copy and see for yourself how incredible Ottawa’s young authors’ talent can be.
