After months of public consultation, we finally get to see the designs for the joint Ottawa Public Library and Library Archives Canada facility and we are beyond excited by the beautiful vision that has emerged.
Designs were revealed at the Ottawa Art Gallery on January 23 at an event filled with local dignitaries, guests, and media, as well as through simultaneous webcast reveal parties at many branches of the Ottawa Public Library.
The building will house the Central Branch of the Ottawa Public Library, Library and Archives Canada, and a host of public spaces, meaning architects Diamond Schmitt and KWC had to bring all those needs together in what must have been a momentous task. At first glance, they seem to have knocked it out of the park.
Concept art shows an open and organic combination of wood, limestone, and windows designed to take in spectacular views of the Ottawa river and parliamentary district. Indigenous elements and spaces have also been incorporated into the design after extensive consultation with the Algonquin Anishinabe and other First Nations.
Our President Vlad Uher was at the event and said, “The design is beautiful, exciting, and very responsive to both the location and the public consultations that involved over 4,000 citizens nationwide.”
It goes without saying that we cannot wait for this inspiring building to come to life in late 2024. There are sure to be more exciting developments as the project continues, so check out the project website at www.inspire555.ca for more information.
Congratulations from the Friends to everyone who helped make this project a reality, including our besties at the Ottawa Public Library, on this very memorable day for library users in Ottawa.
